101 Conversations in Simple Russian

I've started reading one of Olly Richard's books: 101 Conversations in Simple Russian. Supposedly this book is aimed at A2 level learners / speakers so that might indicate my current level. 

For context I have 'learned' 947 words in the Speakly app (at 1000 I will have finished section Intermediate I after completing  Beginner I - III) and I have 2372 words marked as know in LingQ (which includes all kinds of declensions and conjugations).

I'm only at conversation number 6 but so far I feel comfortable in reading and understanding each conversation. I'm finding that there are sometimes 1 to 5 words in each that are new to me, and usually those are the words that are provided with a translation. (This book only provides translations for a couple of key words or phrases, everything else is in Russian).

I'm reading it before going to sleep so that I'm not looking at a screen late at night. I have to be disciplined and not look up the couple of words I don't understand, trusting that I'm understanding the overall story and that is enough.

The advice at the start of the book states that you shouldn't worry about the occasional word that you don't understand, just keep reading. I imagine it's a book I could read a couple of times, learning more words each time and getting better at noticing the grammar.

For now it's a low stress way to end the day with some Russian reading.

3 year overview of my Russian acquisition journey

For anyone interested here's an overview of my Russian acquisition journey over the past 3 years (I started in August 2020). Click on any of the charts to get a closer look. I think this data is 98% accurate. However as time goes on I'm starting to encounter more and more Russian in day to day life which I don't count. For example, reading memes, seeing what friends post on social media, writing messages, meeting Russian speakers in real life. In all my activities I try to focus on material that is of practical use. So I don't read fantasy books like Harry Potter or watch media like Anime. I very rarely watch series or shows but when I do it's usually contemporary drama. In the 5% of time that I'm not reading or listening to material from Speakly I will watch street interviews or dialogues aimed at beginners (Easy Russian, Russian With Max). Russian Listening Comprehension: A character description

While listening to a Dungeons & Dragons stream I experienced my best moment of understanding real spoken Russian.  The game master was describing a magician who was wearing a tall turban made out of some notable material. His magic was derived from astronomical knowledge involving the sun and stars.  It was just two or three sentences but my comprehension was high with almost no translating happening in my mind. I heard the words and I saw the image in my mind. I understood some words like   тюрбан , because they are similar to English. Others were words that I acquired from the 625 words list or from watching comprehensible input videos.
