Milestone: 1200 words in Speakly



According to Speakly I've learned another 200 words (or lemmas) since August 23rd. Over 149 days that comes to 1.34 new words per day. Of course I'm sure that I've picked up more vocabulary through my other activities.

I know there are different levels to knowing a word and the aim is for fully activated vocabulary that can be used in conversation. But it's nice to tick off another milestone. 

If I were to continue at the current rate it would take almost 6 years to learn all 4000 words in the Speakly app.

2800 / 1.34 = 2089 days
2089 / 365 = 5.72 years

I think I will progress faster than that though. I've found that int the past couple of weeks I'm able to use the app for longer periods of time compared to when I first started. Sometimes I can be using Speakly for 25 minutes before I get bored or tired. And I more often I'm being introduced to words that I already know due to my other learning activities. I expect this to happen more frequently as I progress.

And while it's great to have a wide vocabulary, I should remember that knowing 2,500 words/lemmas would probably be enough to facilitate a B1 level of communication ability. Which would be a great achievement!

According to Speakly:
"It’s nice to know all 4,000 words—they will help you feel confident while speaking the language—but to really be able to speak comfortably, knowing around 2,500 of the most common words is enough."

How I Use Anki

Writing about my experience with Memrise and Duolingo compared with Anki made me think about the different ways I use them. As I mentioned before my recall of words learned with the first two apps is mostly confined to when I'm actually using the app. Because of this I keep changing my mind as to whether they are at all useful. But the words I'm learning with Anki are easier for me to recall in real life away from my phone or computer. Now my Anki deck is very simple, I have not added any images or mnemonics. But it's important to know that I'm using Anki in combination with the book of 625 words.  And I'm only adding them page by page as I work through the book. Currently I'm on page 8 covering 48 words. Every day I look at the images that I'm working on and recall the relevant words. And every couple of days I add a new image. 1000 Hours of Russian in (close to) 1000 days

  I recently passed 1000 hours of Russian in almost as many days (944 to be exact). I would have liked to be much further along my Russian acquisition journey, but I guess it's an achievement to have stuck with it consistently over this length of time. As much as I enjoy Russian, I have other interests that are a bigger priority for me. This is the first time I've attempted to acquire a new language so in the beginning there was a lot of trial and error with different approaches and apps. Broadly speaking I've been following a Comprehensible Input / Mass Immersion / Refold approach, but the exact activities varied until I settled on what I found most enjoyable and useful.  In hindsight I would do some things differently, but only to be more efficient rather than to employ a completely different method or strategy.
