Acquiring Russian: March 2024 Report

After two months of minimal study time (due to a move) I've managed to get back into some good habits, almost reaching an average of 1 hour per day. I haven't yet started lessons with my tutor again but would like to do that soon. In the mean time I've been on Tandem to practice with other people, I'm definitely a bit rusty. 

I also had a real world interaction with a Russian speaker this month, with a girl from Tajikistan. I always get a boost of motivation after having a real world conversation. It's good to be taken seriously as a learner and not someone who has just memorised a few phrases.

This month I also spent 30 minutes playing the game Civilization VI in Russian. I'm very familiar with the game series so it was interesting that I could pick up the meaning of several new words through context. While it was fun I'm going to struggle to justify spending time on a game when I could be doing other activities. Especially as we enter the Spring and Summer months. Perhaps I can make time for it later in the year if I still feel it could be beneficial for learning vocabulary.

For anyone interested here's an overview of my Russian acquisition journey over the past 3 years (I started in August 2020). Click on any of the charts to get a closer look. I think this data is 98% accurate. However as time goes on I'm starting to encounter more and more Russian in day to day life which I don't count. For example, reading memes, seeing what friends post on social media, writing messages, meeting Russian speakers in real life. In all my activities I try to focus on material that is of practical use. So I don't read fantasy books like Harry Potter or watch media like Anime. I very rarely watch series or shows but when I do it's usually contemporary drama. How I Use Anki

Writing about my experience with Memrise and Duolingo compared with Anki made me think about the different ways I use them. As I mentioned before my recall of words learned with the first two apps is mostly confined to when I'm actually using the app. Because of this I keep changing my mind as to whether they are at all useful. But the words I'm learning with Anki are easier for me to recall in real life away from my phone or computer. Now my Anki deck is very simple, I have not added any images or mnemonics. But it's important to know that I'm using Anki in combination with the book of 625 words.  And I'm only adding them page by page as I work through the book. Currently I'm on page 8 covering 48 words. Every day I look at the images that I'm working on and recall the relevant words. And every couple of days I add a new image. 1000 Hours of Russian in (close to) 1000 days

  I recently passed 1000 hours of Russian in almost as many days (944 to be exact). I would have liked to be much further along my Russian acquisition journey, but I guess it's an achievement to have stuck with it consistently over this length of time. As much as I enjoy Russian, I have other interests that are a bigger priority for me. This is the first time I've attempted to acquire a new language so in the beginning there was a lot of trial and error with different approaches and apps. Broadly speaking I've been following a Comprehensible Input / Mass Immersion / Refold approach, but the exact activities varied until I settled on what I found most enjoyable and useful.  In hindsight I would do some things differently, but only to be more efficient rather than to employ a completely different method or strategy.
